Bomp! Bomp! Bomp! Oh gosh! You slept in!
You fly out of bed and throw on your burgundy stretch Capri pants, the loose black top with the knotted flowers around the nape, the silver Fleur de lis and gray pearl necklace, and a pair of black wedge booties. You briefly consider that you may have worn this exact outfit last Wed., but no one will remember that, right?!
Does this sound all too familiar? Are you someone who wears the same items over and over again? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then a capsule wardrobe may be just the thing the fashion doctor ordered.
A capsule wardrobe is simply having a few clothing items that never go out of fashion that you can use to build your outfits season by season.
Think skirts, blue jeans, casual pants, and coats. A lot of these items are already hiding in your closet.
If you’re wearing a lot of the same things weekly, you’ve probably already semi-created your own capsule wardrobe. It just needs fine-tuning. The secret is to add a few seasonal accessories that will allow you to add spice to each outfit.
So let’s see how we can create a spicy, Fall capsule wardrobe together, shall we?
The 1st thing you need to do is clean out your closet. And I mean really, really clean it out by removing everything. Now don’t groan and grumble. How do you know what to add for Fall if you don’t even know what you have? They key here is to get everything super organized so you can see what you can mix and match in the blink of an eye.
You will need to make 3 piles or categories:
- Donate Pile: This is the “I wouldn’t be caught dead in that!” pile. It’s also the “I haven’t been a size 4 since 1988.” pile. Let’s be honest, these hips will never be a size 4 again. 😉
- I Love This Pile: This is the pile you’ll build your capsule wardrobe from. It’s the stuff you were already wearing weekly.
- Maybe Pile: This is the ” I really want to keep that, but haven’t worn it in forever.” or “Hmmmm, I don’t know just yet.” pile.
The next thing you need to do is decide how you want to sort your “I love this” pile.
Will you sort these clothes by season? Or by color? For example, I have all my pants and skirts on one row, all my sweaters together, all short sleeves together, all tennis together, etc.
Don’t over analyze this step. Just pick a system that makes sense to you and allows you to easily mix and match your outfits. Put all the keepers back into the closet using your new system.
Now let’s tackle that “Maybe” pile.
I would be ruthless with yourself here. If you seriously didn’t wear the red and navy striped sweater from the Gap last season, then you won’t wear it this season. Give it away!
Really, really consider each piece, being honest with yourself, and decide whether you’ll wear it (place it back in the closet) or give it away (put it in that donate pile).
If something is super sentimental, decide the value it holds. Could you take a picture of it and let it go to someone who would actually wear it? Would you really miss it if you donated it? Don’t muddle too long here. The key is to make quick, but good decisions and move on.
Now you are ready to add a few key pieces to carry your capsule wardrobe through fall. This is the exciting step!
Take a good look through your Fall pieces. What pieces could you add to really spice it up? Was there anything you felt was missing from last year?
