Here’s the recap:
Silver plating is the process of taking a base metal such as copper or brass and covering it with a layer of silver to coat the base metal. It is a relatively inexpensive alternative to sterling silver. If you want to know more about sterling silver, see my post on it here.
The biggest concern about silver plated jewelry is will the silver plating tarnish. It is a valid concern and the answer is yes, it’s possible. But silver plating has come a long way over the years.
I personally own several silver plated pieces of jewelry and they still look lovely today. The key, as in all things, is to properly care for your silver plated jewelry so that it will last you many years.
You want to clean silver-plated jewelry regularly with a dry, soft cloth to remove dirt and oils. Silver-plated metals will tarnish over time. The best prevention is cleaning upon removal and storing your jewelry in an airtight container.
And remember never swim, shower, or apply perfumes or lotions while wearing your jewelry! All of these things are a sure fire way to cause your piece to tarnish!
Also bear in mind the source of your jewelry.
If you buy a silver plated necklace that you feel the price is just super amazing (think Cracker Jack prices), then you’re probably going to end up with a tarnished necklace.
Years ago before I became a jewelry designer, I bought a cheap, cheap ring from some store in our mall. I wore it while teaching and never removed it when washing my hands at school, which was pretty frequently. And yep, the plating flaked right off of it.
On the other hand, I have a silver plated chain necklace with a tennis charm that I wear EVERY time I play tennis. It’s my good luck charm! *wink* The chain gets super sweaty while I play and I leave it hanging from a necklace display in my bathroom.
Has it tarnished? You bet. But I wanted it to patina over time. I don’t ever clean it and I don’t store it properly (don’t judge me). And by the way, I’ve been wearing this necklace for the past three years!
Has the plating totally flaked off? NO, it hasn’t flaked at all because I don’t buy my chain from a bubble gum vendor. I purchase my supplies from quality vendors, so I can be happy with the items I am offering my customers. And I wear what I make as well.
And I get compliments on that tennis necklace A LOT and loads of requests for me to make them a necklace just like mine!
Here is another piece that I wear daily.
The fleur de lis is silver plated. I actually follow the care rules with this piece. You can see in the image above that my fleur de lis pendant has NOT tarnished nor has it flaked or peeled.
I included a brand new fleur de lis pendant in the image that is sealed in an air tight container, so you could see that there is no difference between the two. I’ve been wearing this necklace now for two years and it’s still beautiful!
So rest assured that you can enjoy buying silver plated jewelry, you just have to care for it correctly in order for you to have many happy memories wearing it.
And you can trust me as your jewelry designer. I don’t design anything that I wouldn’t wear myself.
